The Movie Mull

This week our host, Neil, takes his fellow mulls on the first of a two-part journey through director Danny Boyle's extraordinary filmography.

For this week's episode, the Mull's are back to their regular schedule and will be reviewing four films that they've been watching recently.  Justin kicks off proceedings by talking Dahl prequel Wonka (01:14) directed by Paul King and starring Timothy Chalamet as the titular chocolatier, then Neil reviews Apple TV+ new spy action-comedy The Family Plan (19:58), Richard heads into murkier ethical waters with Emerald Fennell's darkly comedic thriller Saltburn (29:20), while Darren wraps up proceedings discussing the latest animated film from Studio Ghibli and legendary director Hayao Miyazaki, The Boy and the Heron (43:48).

For this week's Christmas Eve episode, the Movie Mull take you through some of the Christmas movies they've been watching recently... Darren's been catching up with director Jodie Foster's Home for the Holidays (which turned out not to be a Christmas movie after all!). Justin tries to sell the team on Daddy's Home 2, Richard has been seeing the classic Bill Murray take on A Christmas Carol, Scrooged, while our host, Neil, tells us all about The Mean One (a slightly different take on The Grinch). Stick around at the end of the episode, when all four talk about some of the must-see films they come back to every Christmas season...

For this week's episode, as in all heist movies, we move through three crucial phases:
The Plan: Richard, gathers his fellow mulls and asks them to bring along their special skills... or, to be more precise, their Top 5 Heist movies - and attempts to define for us exactly what a heist movie is... 
The Execution: From Asphalt Jungle, to Ocean's 11, to Inside Man and on to many, many more, the gang gather around the table and try to pin down the very best of the genre (with a few controversial opinions shared along the way).  
The Aftermath: Did we miss an absolute classic? Is there an example you'd like to recommend? Jump in on the comments and let us know.  

To quote this week's host, Justin, in a slightly chaotic introduction: "This week's what we've been watching episode is about what we've been watching...". With that cleared up, this week's reviews are:
Richard starts us off with a review of Nyad (01'36") featuring some incredible performances from Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, Neil shares his thoughts about Netflix's latest Adam Sandler collaboration - animated movie, Leo (12'39"). Then, Justin talks about Danny Dyer's 2006 Comedy-Horror Severance (18'40") before Darren wraps things up talking about Disney Animation's latest feature length animated classic, Wish (25'55"), from the directors of Frozen on writing and directing duties respectively (but separately) and featuring the voices of Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine. Finally, without really intending to do so, we share a few thoughts about Marvel's latest: The Marvels.

He challenges the Mulls to assign classic horror movie tropes to a fun family favourite... Hollywood?  We're ready to pitch our vision...
